Blu-ray discs
If you’re truly tech-savvy, you already have a state of the art Blu-ray player. You may have a good collection going, but if you really want to show off the crisp visuals and ear-busting sound effects, these are the titles you must have in your library.
Baraka: Ron Fricke’s Baraka has no conventional plot to speak of. Instead, it offers beautiful glimpses of the world we live in…and probably never knew existed. This narrative-free documentary takes us to 24 different countries, unifying city life and tribal rituals into one transcendent disc brimming with beautiful sights best suited for Blu-ray.
The Dark Knight: Christopher Nolan gave new urgency to the Batman franchise by creating an overwhelmingly bleak world not so different from our own. The sharp, gritty, realistic images, refreshingly free of CGI, come across best on Blu-ray, especially Batman’s night-time flight through China.
Planet Earth: The mini-series phenomenon that captured the attention of the world looks breathtaking gorgeous on Blu-ray. Caves, forests and underwater vistas come to striking life in this beautiful, flowing series narrated by Sigourney Weaver. An environmental masterpiece thankfully free of political statements, it’s a refreshing reminder how amazing our planet is.
Up/Wall-E: A tie for Pixar’s two most recent masterpieces. While the former is a gorgeously animated cautionary tale about a plucky robot in a dystopian future, the latter is a simultaneous heartbreaking and heartwarming tale about the importance of going on the adventures you’ve always wanted to embark on. Both are pristine transfers on Blu-ray, and must be experienced in the sharpest resolution possible,
Casino Royale: Critics and audiences loved Daniel Craig’s spirited reinterpretation of James Bond as a less sophisticated, more muscled grunt in the visceral adaptation of Ian Fleming’s first Bond novel. The gritty visuals and pounding sound transfer excellently to Blu-ray, and must be seen.
