Ten years ago, cell phones were gaining in popularity, but they weren’t quite seen as the necessities they are today. In the 90’s, it was rare for a class to be interrupted by a cell phone ring. And if it happened, it was probably in a college lecture, not a middle school homeroom. But as the popularity of mobile devices continues to explode, the ages of their users continues to decline.

There are some valid arguments for kids having cell phones. Safety, for instance. If your child walks to school or friends’ houses on a regular basis, a cell phone could definitely come in handy as far as peace of mind. If something bad were to happen on the way to their destination, having a cell phone to call for help would be invaluable.

Another argument to get your kid a cell phone is convenience. They’re great for families who participate in lots of events and after-school activities. If a practice gets cancelled or a study group runs late, Mom and Dad can be notified instantly. And if you’re late to pick up your son or daughter from school, you can always give them a call to let them know you’re on your way.

Cell phones have their downsides as well, though. Children, especially teens, sometimes tend latch onto their cells like security blankets. Some argue that favoring texting over face-to-face interaction can lead to socialization issues. And the recent phenomenon of “sexting” can be downright dangerous. Today’s cell phones are becoming more and more sophisticated, carrying many of the same threats of predators and cyberbullying as a computer with an Internet connection—in a much smaller, easily concealed package.

With proper monitoring, cell phones can make life safer and more convenient for both kids and adults. But like a lot of things in a child’s life, they require regulation to avoid becoming destructive.

While constant contact may be a big reason for the existence of cell phones, there are certain times and places outside of the obvious where talking on them is flat out inappropriate. Here are five of places where you should keep your mobile in your pocket.

 Waiting Rooms

Waiting rooms, whether at doctors’ offices, repair shops or the DMV, are typically quiet places. Therefore, anyone talking on a cell phone sticks out like a sore thumb, broadcasting his conversation to an entire room of people, forcing everyone to eavesdrop. Believe it or not, no one wants to hear about your plans for the weekend while they’re waiting for a flu shot.

 Concerts

Unlike waiting rooms, concerts are usually loud places, which means people tend to not just talk on their phones, but shout into them. It’s great that you’re having such a wonderful time that you feel the need to share the experience with someone else, but keep in mind the fact that those around you came (and paid) to hear the music, not your conversation.

 Retail Counters

It’s astounding how often people stay on their cell phones while checking out at a store, the post office or a hotel. The person on the other side of the counter is giving you their full attention, and they deserve yours, even if it’s only for a minute.

 At the Table

There is quite possibly no ruder place to pull out your cell phone than at the dinner (or lunch, or breakfast) table. Whether you’re at a resteraunt or not, you’re telling those at the table with you that they aren’t as important as whoever may be calling.

 Public Transportation

Much like waiting rooms, buses and trains are places where it’s nearly imposible not to overhear strangers’ cell phone conversations. But the fact that theses spaces are so confined and inescapable makes them an even worse location to carry on a call.
